Bridges Beyond 17: Bridging Pathways to Adulthood for Young Black Women and Girls
We are united by the following mission statement:
Bridges Beyond 17 (BB17) is a group of women who identify and support local organizations focused on advocacy and programming that transforms the lives of young black women and girls.
A core focus of our philanthropic strategy is to support organizations with strong missions that are filling a critical need in the community, and have limited financial resources. Our goal is to have our investment act as a catalyst for their work and to help raise the visibility of their cause. We emphasize missions serving Black women and girls given the research that shows their experiences and needs are often overlooked and suffer from lack of sufficient investment. In 2020, a Ms. Foundation for Women report found that “total philanthropic giving to women and girls of color is just $5.48 per year for each woman or girl of color in the United States, accounting for just 0.5% of the total $66.9 billion given by foundations.”
BB17 acts as an important bridge connecting these organizations with resources in our local community. We are grateful to be able to come together socially, pool our financial resources, conduct due diligence on our local community, learn about current and pressing local social challenges, and grant awards to very deserving organizations doing excellent work for Black women and girls. We look forward to incrementally growing BB17 to be able to support more organizations for years to come.
We currently only consider candidates who are referred by a current member. We have one invitation-only meeting/event a year that acts as an open house for prospective members to share with them our mission, vision and impact.

We do not take unsolicited requests for support. And we currently only invest in organizations that have active programs in the Washington, DC region and we only support black female-led organizations at this time.
